engaging the senses
The current world we live in is fast paced and technological. Overtime, organic experiences have become sterile and streamlined. In this machine digital era, I feel our senses collectively has become duller. Personally, it has created an insidious feeling of being lost and disconnected. Thus, I reflected on a ‘moment’ I felt truly grounded and present. The moments were when I gardened with my mother and hiking through forest. The swatches I created are tangible expressions of those moments.

Sample 1 was focused on slowing down and mindfully taking great care with something fragile. I collected leaves from gardens and embroidered them. as i worked, the leaves would gradually die and decompose. it served as a reminder of the fragility of life and death - alongside the preciousness of time.
The materials I used for this sample included a recycled cotton sheet, a variety of leaves, and handmade wool needle felt. The embroidery technique I wanted to emphasise was french knotting - to create a uniquely textured surface, reminiscent of bugs or cocoons.

Sample 2 was achieved through an experimental combination of weaving, heat moulding and felting to recreate the surface of a moss and fern laden forest. There was no particular plan - i simply interwove the different materials together
I wanted to capture the variety of organic textures growing on a tree. There is no particular organisation of each elements as the sample aims to convey a natural growth.
